After the British burned the White Home in 1814, Irish-born designer James Hoban was remembered to restore the Executive Mansion. The very first had actually ruined the inside of the home, and portions of the sandstone walls needed to be changed. Hoban was offered less time and funds to finish the job, so he decided to utilize wood woods instead of brick for much of the interior structure.

Most notable of these was the 1902 Theodore Roosevelt restoration, and the building and construction of a brand-new roofing and third flooring by Calvin Coolidge in 1927. The usage of contemporary steel and concrete put remarkable strain on Hoban's woods, a lot so that by 1948 the White Home was in danger of collapse.

Truman oversaw the most ambitious restoration in the house's history, gutting the interior down to the basement and reconstructing the interior with a steel frame. The wood used by James Hoban was eliminated, and repurposed whenever possible. The rest of these products were distributed, became souvenirs and offered to support the remodellings, or destroyed.
